Freedom Triumphs: 2 EYN Pastors Released After Harrowing Week of Captivity
Two EYN Pastors Released After Harrowing Week of Captivity
Two pastors from the EYN Church, Rev. James T. Kwayang and Rev. Ishaku D. Chiwar, have been freed after spending a week in captivity. Their release was confirmed earlier this evening by the EYN General Secretary, Rev. James K. Musa, in a WhatsApp message shared at around 7:00 PM.
“I am directed by Mr. President Rev. Dr. Daniel Y. C. Mbaya to inform you that our brothers and colleagues (Rev. James Kwayang and Rev. Ishaku D. Chiwar) have been released by the kidnappers,” Musa said.
He extended gratitude to those who supported the church during this ordeal.
“The president also asked me to appreciate you, for your prayers and support on behalf of EYN President Rev. Dr. Daniel Y. C. Mbaya,” the message added.
Rev. Musa also reflected on the significance of their release.
“As we celebrate the safe return of these two dedicated servants of God, we are reminded of the power of collective prayer and support. Let’s continue to lift up our nation in prayer, seeking God’s guidance, protection, and blessings.”
Armed attackers took the two clergymen in the early hours of December 30, 2024. The kidnapping occurred in Hayin Gada, Billa Village, in the Malabu district of Adamawa State’s Fufore Local Government Area.
Residents reported that the armed assailants stormed the pastors’ homes at around 2:00 a.m., wielding weapons and forcefully taking the men away. The incident has left the community reeling, as pastors are seen as pillars of peace and security in the region.
The Adamawa State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Dankombo Morris, condemned the abduction in the strongest terms. The commissioner deployed a team of operatives equipped with resources to track the kidnappers, rescue the victims, and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“This unprovoked act is unacceptable. We are committed to safeguarding lives and combating all forms of violent crimes,” CP Morris said.
A resident, who requested anonymity, described the community’s fear. “These attacks are terrifying. We hope the police succeed in rescuing the pastors quickly,” the resident said.
The police have called for community cooperation in providing information that could aid in the investigation. “The support of the public is critical to our mission to protect lives and property,” a police spokesperson emphasised.
The kidnapping of Rev. Kwayang and Rev. Chiwar has sparked outrage across the country. Religious leaders, local authorities, and citizens have condemned the attack, urging the government to strengthen security in vulnerable areas.
“These heinous acts against our religious leaders must stop,” one local leader said. “We need immediate action to protect communities and prevent further kidnappings.”
Details of their release remain unclear, as authorities have not disclosed whether negotiations took place or a ransom was paid. The week-long captivity was marked by prayers and solidarity within the EYN Church and beyond.
Community members held vigil after vigil, pleading for the pastors’ safety. “We placed our hope in God, knowing He would bring them back,” a church member said.
This incident has reignited debates about security in rural areas, particularly in Adamawa State. Many have called for proactive measures to prevent future occurrences, citing the need for more police patrols, community engagement, and technological surveillance.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring justice. “We are determined to prevent such acts from happening again and to restore peace in the affected areas,” CP Morris assured.
As news of the pastors’ freedom spread, gratitude poured in from various quarters. Church members, family, and friends expressed joy and relief. “It’s a miracle that they’re back safely. We thank everyone who prayed and supported us during this tough time,” one relative said.
The release of Rev. Kwayang and Rev. Chiwar is a reminder of the strength found in collective prayer and community action. While their freedom brings a sense of closure, it also highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and security in vulnerable communities.
The abduction and release of these religious leaders serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing many regions in Nigeria. As efforts to tackle insecurity continue, communities are urged to remain hopeful and united, working hand in hand with authorities to ensure safety for all.
