Two Reps dump PDP for APC

PDP failed to lay the foundation for sanctioning illegal defections

Two members of the House of Representatives defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

At the plenary on Wednesday, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, read separate letters announcing their defections from Mr Ephraim Nwuzi, who represents Etche / Omuma Federal Constituency in Rivers State, and Mr David Abel, who represents Gashaka / Kurmi / Sardauna Federal Constituency in Taraba State.

Toby Okechukwu, Deputy Minority Leader; Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader; and Kingsley Chinda, leader of the PDP caucus, separately raised constitutional points of order, asking Gbajabiamila to declare their seats vacant because there were no crises in the PDP in the respective states of the defectors.

However, the Speaker described opposition leaders as hypocrites, recalling that he had protested against defections to the PDP as Minority Leader in previous Assemblies, but his claims were rejected.

Gbajabiamila observed that when in control, the PDP failed to lay the foundation for sanctioning illegal defections.

He said,
“Like you used to tell me, your points are noted. Any more defections?”
