Earlier, a recount was requested by Trump's campaign, something the trailing candidate is entitled to request if the margin is below 1 per cent.

When almost 3.3 million votes have been counted, Biden leads by 0.624 percentage points. The campaign team for Biden says they are assured of winning every recount. They also state that for the presidency they are on track.

Trump won Wisconsin by less than 23,000 votes in 2016, a breakthrough that helped give him his first term in the White House, along with victories in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Democrats were eager to retake Wisconsin, a state that since Ronald Reagan in 1984 hadn't gone to a Republican prior to Trump.
