Yungur Chiefdom: A Monumental Milestone for Unity and Progress

The creation of the Yungur Chiefdom by His Excellency Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri marks a monumental turning point for the Yungur and Mboi people, whose shared history, culture, and linguistic heritage have long been overshadowed by years of marginalisation and political divisions.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to Governor Fintiri’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions, fostering unity, and promoting peace and development across Adamawa State.

With its headquarters in Dumne, Song LGA, Adamawa State, Nigeria and encompassing seven districts—Chubawuru, Ditera, Dumne, Gben, Mboi, Suktu, and Waltadi—the Yungur Chiefdom represents a deliberate effort to unite the Yungur and Mboi communities under one umbrella.

These two sister tribes, bound by blood and history, have often been victims of manipulative “divide and rule” tactics that perpetuated unnecessary political and social divisions. By consolidating these communities, the chiefdom offers an opportunity to rewrite this narrative and chart a path of cooperation and shared progress.

One of the most significant aspects of this new chiefdom is its autonomy. Reporting directly to the Governor without any allegiance to other chiefdoms or emirates, the Yungur Chiefdom has been given the freedom to prioritise the welfare of its people without external interference.

This independence ensures that decisions and policies will reflect the unique needs and aspirations of the Yungur and Mboi people.

The paramount ruler of the Yungur Chiefdom, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Gubo Yungur, will soon be announced by the Governor after consultations with critical stakeholders.

This inclusive and transparent process is crucial for ensuring that the right leader, who understands the historical ties and aspirations of the people, emerges to guide the chiefdom into a future of unity and development.

For decades, the Mboi people, alongside their Yungur brothers, have faced systemic marginalisation that hindered their socio-political and economic advancement.

The creation of this chiefdom is a bold statement that their voices matter and that their place in Adamawa’s history and development is indispensable.

This chiefdom’s creation acknowledges the intertwined destinies of the Yungur and Mboi tribes, recognising our shared culture, language, and ancestral ties.

It represents a strategic “marriage” aimed at ending the manipulative practices that once fostered divisions and impeded collective progress. For the first time, the Yungur and Mboi can stand together as one people, united in purpose and vision.

While some voices have expressed concerns about Dumne being chosen as the chiefdom’s headquarters instead of Ditera, it is important to view this decision as a starting point.

The location of the headquarters does not diminish the significance of the ancestral lands of either tribe. Rather, it symbolises a new chapter of collaboration and mutual respect between the Yungur and Mboi people.

Governor Fintiri’s indication that some chiefdoms may be upgraded to first-class status in the future leaves room for optimism.

More importantly, it underscores the idea that classifications should not define the worth or significance of any chiefdom but rather inspire the people to work together towards greater achievements.

The Yungur Chiefdom offers a fresh opportunity for the Yungur and Mboi people to move forward together. By providing more centres for dispute resolution, improving governance, and strengthening social cohesion, the chiefdom creates a foundation for sustainable development and collective progress.

This milestone also reaffirms the resilience of the Yungur and Mboi people, who have weathered decades of challenges while preserving our cultural heritage.

Now, as part of the Adamawa Council of Chiefs and Emirs, the Yungur Chiefdom has equal representation, ensuring that our voice would be heard at the state level.

As the Yungur Chiefdom embarks on this historic journey, unity and cooperation must remain at the forefront. The Yungur and Mboi now have a rare opportunity to rewrite our collective narrative, embracing our shared heritage while working towards a brighter future for generations yet unborn.

Governor Fintiri’s visionary leadership in creating the Yungur Chiefdom is a validation of his commitment to the welfare and development of the Yungur and Mboi communities.

It is now up to us to seize this opportunity, set aside differences, and build a future defined by unity, resilience, and progress.

As a Yungur elder recently remarked, “We cannot afford the errors of the past. We have to start somewhere, and this is a welcome development.”

This sentiment captures the spirit of this moment—a chance to heal, to grow, and to move forward as one.

In celebrating this monumental achievement, we (Yungur and Mboi) must remember that our strength lies in our unity.

By working together, we can transform this chiefdom into a beacon of hope, peace, and development for Adamawa State and beyond.
