Zulum Approves N1.4 Billion for Dualisation of Airport Road
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved N1.4 billion for the immediate dualization of a 1.9km stretch of road from Ngomari Junction to Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri.
The announcement was made during the inaugural state executive council meeting at the Government House.
Commissioner for Works, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, emphasized that the project will significantly improve access to the airport, which is gearing up to commence international flight operations.
“The N1.4 billion will cover the dualization of the road up to the Hajj Operational Unit at the airport. Additional roads and drainage systems will also be constructed across communities in the three senatorial districts this year,” Gubio stated.
The commissioner highlighted the successful completion of several road and drainage projects across the state, including asphalt works on roads damaged by last year’s devastating floods.
In the health sector, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana, outlined the state’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage. Governor Zulum has allocated 15% of the state budget to health, with plans to train more medical personnel, rebuild damaged facilities, and equip hospitals and clinics for modern healthcare delivery.
“The insurgency has led to the loss of 45% of our health institutions,” Gana said. “To address this, we’ll complete two colleges of nursing in Monguno and Gwoza this year to produce more frontline health workers.”
Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe revealed efforts to drastically reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state.
“We aim to bring down the current figure of 700,000 to 200,000 by 2027,” he assured, highlighting ongoing educational reforms to improve access and quality.
The dualization of the airport road is part of Governor Zulum’s broader development agenda, which includes improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education to rebuild and transform Borno State.
With projects like these, the state government is working to restore normalcy and ensure sustainable development after years of insurgency and infrastructure challenges.
